Position Summary:

Responsible for facilitating the advancement of environmental initiatives and sustainability programs related to shipboard technologies, operations, and management systems. This includes all shipboard operations such as but not limited to waste and chemical, water and wastewater, and energy and air technologies and management systems.  Responsible for the development and analysis of company wastewater management policy and procedures. Responsible for the collection and reporting of environmental operations data and related company metrics related to wastewater. This includes coordinating environmental stewardship content for internal and external reports and presentations regarding Management System reviews, quarterly updates to company Objectives & Targets, the Global Reporting Initiative.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Incident prevention and response including holding the Environmental Duty Phone to support RCG’s fleet 24/7 for Environmental incidents, assisting the ships with proper reporting to relevant authorities and flag states, and working with the Environmental Operations Manager to develop fleetwide preventative actions and lessons learned
  • Alaska operational support for the Alaska season including ship registration, arranging pre-season sampling and preparation for ships participating in the Alaska discharge permit, seasonal ship visits to provide an overview of Alaska requirements to ship’s officers and crew, and completing all mid-season and post-season reports as required by Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation
  • Assists with the management of the Fleet Chemical Management program
  • Works with the ships and marine operations to provide operational exemptions to ships as needed
  • Manages all oil response plans and COFRs for the fleet (SOPEP, NTVRP, Regional Plans as needed (Hawaii, California, Washington, China, Panama Canal, American Samoa)
  • Participates in training/drills related to Oil Spill Response (IMTTX, SMFF, RACE Drill) that is required for the company to maintain valid response plans
  • Provides training to new EOs at Level 1 training
  • Coordinates and completes the annual NPDES Batch Report for submission to the EPA
  • Policy review and update- including owning and updating the Oil Response Plan Manual in SQM.
  • Review requests from ships with regard to exemptions from policy criteria when an environmental benefit can be proven.
  • Conducts training with environmental officers and shore side management as needed and respond to questions and queries from Environmental Officers or other shipboard personnel.
  • Support the advancement of Environmental Stewardship initiatives and strategic goals related to Waste and Chemical Management, Water and Wastewater, and Energy and Air.
  • International travel may be required up to 25% of the year
  • Able to prepare own travel budget and apply corporate accounting principles to ensure compliance

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelors degree required, Masters Preferred in environmental management, sustainable tourism, marine affairs and policy or related field. Minimum of 2-3 years corporate work or experience required or related Master degree. Shipboard experience is preferred in the capacity of an Environmental Officer within the cruise line industry.
  • Strong communication, presentation, training and facilitation skills.
  • Strong understanding of technical system and their integration to processes
  • Ability to develop, plan and organize tactical plans utilizing project management principles.
  • Knowledge of international, regional and national maritime environmental laws and regulations required, such as IMO/MARPOL and US Federal environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004, Global Reporting Index (GRI)
  • Ability to communicate tactfully with, managers, coworkers and shipboard employees to resolve problems and negotiate resolutions.
  • Good understanding of marine pollution technical/environmental systems, prevention/control equipment operations and theory a plus/preferred.
  • Proficiency with internet search engines, email applications and Microsoft Office applications required (specifically; Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, Access). Understanding of Adobe software (Adobe Professional, Dreamweaver and Flash) required.
  • Candidate must be able to conduct independent research and communicate findings.
  • Possess strong English oral and written skills, multiple languages a plus
