Job Description and Duties

Be essential at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Lead a broad range of diverse biological and regulatory tasks including functioning as the regional urban wildlife coordinator, investigating wildlife-related reports, acting as regional liaison for wildlife rehabilitation and restricted species programs and significant wildlife die-off incidents. Investigate reports of abandoned, injured or diseased wildlife. Engage in public outreach and education. Responsible for responding to public safety calls along with Law Enforcement personnel. Competently use firearms as per the Department’s Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment. Incumbent will design and implement or direct urban wildlife management projects and develop and utilize management strategies to reduce human-wildlife conflicts. Additional duties include conducting biological studies and surveys of various species and habitats and acts as regional representative for the Department’s Private Lands Management.

The incumbent will perform population assessment and surveys, research, telemetric monitoring, movement and survival monitoring on black bears and other large mammal species and provide a broad range of diverse biological and environmental review. Works closely with regional staff, Law Enforcement Division, Wildlife Health Laboratory, and federal, state and local agencies. Perform investigations associated with wildfire, drought, disease, or contaminants. Good communication skills are important as the incumbent will participate in public meetings and seminars. The primary geographical focus of this position will be in Los Angeles County but may lead work in any part of the Region and occasionally statewide will be required.

Working Conditions

Office location will be at Seal Beach CDFW office. Work hours may be 10+ hours per day, atypical hours and on weekends. Exposure to temperature extremes is to be expected. Some overnight travel and camping will be required. Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and hike cross-country to remote survey sites in rugged terrain. Incumbent must be willing to work in remote locations and alone if necessary. Flying in helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft is required. Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs. Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person. Must attend meetings. Ability to wear a field uniform, as appropriate. Possession of valid driver license required. Ability to drive up to 8-hours. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals. Must complete mandatory wildlife capture training and firearms training within 6 months of hire. Must be willing and capable to competently use firearms as per the Department’s Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment. Must be willing to handle live animals, carcasses, and conduct simple tissue sampling and necropsies.

Special Requirements

Ability to work independently and as a team; to communicate and manage high stress situations in a calm, organized and professional manner; and to represent agency viewpoint without personal conflicts. Must be willing to work atypical hours, 10+ hours per day, and on weekends. Must be willing and capable to competently use firearms as per the Department’s Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment. Must be willing to handle live animals, carcasses, and conduct simple tissue sampling and necropsies. Must be able to lift 40 pounds. Safely operate a motor vehicle, drive on dirt roads using 4x4, pull a trailer, hike off trail in remote environments and extreme temperatures. Must be willing to fly in a helicopter and fixed wing for surveys.

Communicate effectively both in writing and orally to large and small groups with various educational backgrounds. Utilize geo-referencing software applications, geographic information systems, data management, prepare multi-media communications and presentations.
